As I sit down to reflect on my first two months at folkehøgskole, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and joy. These past few weeks have been filled with unforgettable moments, new friendships that feel like family, and incredible experiences that have already started to shape who I am.
Finding My Family in New Friends
Before coming to folkehøgskole, I was both excited and nervous. Moving to a new place where I didn’t know anyone was daunting, but little did I know that within a short span of time, the people here would become like my second family. From the very first week, I found myself surrounded by such a positive, welcoming community. We shared laughter, stories, and late-night conversations, quickly bonding over shared experiences and the excitement of starting this new chapter together.
We spend a lot of time together, and that closeness has turned casual friendships into deep, meaningful connections. Whether it’s cooking dinner, practicing for our projects, or just chilling in the common room, there’s never a dull moment. I’ve learned that being at a folkehøgskole isn’t just about what you learn in class—it’s about the people you meet and the memories you create together!
Adventure in the Southwest: Mountain Climbing and Surfing
One of my highlights from these first two months was our epic trip to the southwest of Norway. I knew our country was famous for its natural beauty, but nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience. We spent several days in the heart of nature, surrounded by stunning fjords, towering mountains, and rugged coastlines.
The first part of the trip was mountain climbing. There’s something truly magical about standing at the top of a mountain, looking out over the breathtaking landscape. The climb itself was challenging but incredibly rewarding, both physically and mentally. It reminded me how to push my limits and appreciate the beauty in taking things one step at a time.
But the adventure didn’t stop there. After the mountains, we headed to the coast for some surfing! This was my first time trying to ride the waves, and it was so much fun (even though I wiped out a few times). There was something about being out in the water, feeling the cold, salty spray, and cheering each other on as we learned the basics of surfing. The exhilaration of standing on the board for the first time is something I’ll never forget, and it was one of those moments where I realized how lucky I was to be having these incredible experiences with friends who were just as excited as I was.
Thursday twist, Funky Fridays, and Sushi Sundays
Life at folkehøgskole is never boring, thanks to our fun weekly traditions. Every thursday we have what we call “Twist”—which is basically a night of surprises. It could be anything from a spontaneous game night to a themed party or an outdoor adventure. The unpredictability of Twist nights adds a spark of excitement to the week, and it’s always a blast to see what the teachers and students have in store.
Another weekly highlight is “Funky Fridays.” As the name suggests, it’s all about letting loose and embracing the quirky, fun side of life. We play funky music, dress up in ridiculous outfits, and just enjoy a carefree night of dancing, laughter, and games. There’s something so freeing about Funky Fridays—it’s a chance to forget about everything else and just live in the moment.
Then there’s “Sushi Sunday,” which has quickly become a favorite tradition. Every Sunday evening, a group of us gets together to prepare and eat sushi. It started out as a small idea but has grown into a weekly ritual that we all look forward to. I’m not a professional sushi chef (yet!), but the process of making it with my friends, sharing stories, and indulging in our creations has become a comforting, almost meditative way to wind down the weekend.
Looking Ahead
With so many adventures already under my belt, I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings. Folkehøgskole has been a place of growth, adventure, and connection—far beyond what I ever expected. I’m so happy to be here, and I can’t wait to continue learning, both in and out of the classroom, with this amazing group of people who feel like family. Whether it’s conquering new heights, riding the waves, or dancing our hearts out on Funky Fridays, I know these memories will stay with me forever.

Here’s to the next chapter of this incredible journey! 🌟
